Put a Skirt On It

Theory Top, Peter Cohen Pants and Awake Skirt (available at Savannah Santa Monica), My grandmother's Necklace, Gianvito Rossi Sandals,  Mulberry Clutch.

One day, while visiting with my friend Carrie, at Savannah, my eyes landed on this “cutout skirt.” I told her that it was interesting but how would you wear it? She showed me these zebra print leggings that went underneath it, but I made a face of uncertainty. Then she told me to try it with these Peter Cohen silk “pajama” pants. The Pajama look is very “au courant" these days, but I for one have not bought into it. I cannot see myself pushing a grocery cart in silk pajamas or a slip, but many fashionistas love the look. Peter Cohen’s version is chic, comfy and extremely wearable. I was sold on the pants all on their own, but doubtful as to how they would look under this skirt. I reluctantly climbed into the skirt, and lo and behold, Carrie was right. In the blink of an eye, the entire outfit went from comfy and casual to comfy and hip. The shoes are a statement piece all on their own, but they add a little pizzazz in just the right way.

Sometimes when you put a skirt over pants, you create the unexpected, that exciting intersection where fashion meets art.

Vintage Baby

Vintage Suede Jacket, ROI Sweater (available at Scoop NYC), Gucci Belt, AG Jeans, Alexander Wang Booties, Chloe Bucket Bag.

I have a vintage baby. By that I mean that my daughter is enamored with all things vintage. She buys her clothes in flea markets, the Goodwill store and vintage clothing shops. I don’t recall where this preference originated, but suffice to say, Serena has eclectic taste and is as individual as they come. She is quite particular about her clothing and accessories choices as they need to look well worn without being shoddy, and have the look and feel of having had a previous life with someone from another era. On a recent trip to New York, I asked Serena if we could spend the day in Brooklyn so that I could glean as much as I could about her favorite haunts. I watched her haggle over the price of an extremely well worn shearling coat (negotiated the price from $120 to $75…go Serena!), to purchasing hip rider vintage jeans, and a 1960’s baby doll shirt for a whopping $35.00. I was in awe of her skill, expertise and boldness. Where did this all come from? Hmmm… I wonder…..but don’t ever tell her that!

Having been horrified by the ripped shoulder bag she was using, I insisted on getting her a new one. She agreed that the bag, which she has owned and used for the past 5 years, was ready for disposal. We found a slightly more upscale vintage store on the trendy streets of Williamsburgh and I insisted that we have a look there. She dragged her heels, claiming that the items were far too expensive. I argued back, and insisted on getting her a beautiful butter colored backpack that the owner had just picked up at a flea market in Italy and was selling for $60.00. I told her that was an exceptional deal and there was no way of arguing about it, I was getting it for her, period, end of story. Not one to shop in a vintage store, I decided to make the most of the moment and began to explore the racks of clothing. I was about halfway into one rack when my eyes fell upon this fringe suede jacket in the same color as Serena’s new backpack. I slipped into the jacket and the magic unfolded. I knew exactly what had appealed to Serena. This jacket had a past and I now decided that I was going to be its future. After glancing at the price, $75.00, I made the instantaneous decision to buy it. The next day, I felt somewhat empowered, and most definitely like a fashionista;  I wore it all over the streets of NYC, receiving compliments from strangers, both men and women.

As I continue to wear it here in Los Angeles, I am warmed by the memory of that wonderful day with Serena and by the fact that there is a little vintage in all of us. My vintage baby taught me a few things about fashion, but most importantly about life.

A Knit To Remember

Worth New York Knit Dress and Poncho, Sergio Rossi Sandals, Chanel Clutch, Lanvin Necklace, Calypso St. Barth Bracelets, Celine Shades.

I could sing the praises of owning a good knit dress, forever. Practical, lightweight, and classic are just some of the qualities that come to mind when I think of ways to describe this ensemble by one of my favorite clothing lines, Worth New York. Having been a long-time fan of the color olive green, finding the right accessories for this outfit was relatively simple for me. The Sergio Rossi sandals and Lanvin necklace add the finishing touches to this fabulous ensemble.

This outfit has so many things going for it, from its beautiful color to its stylish asymmetrical poncho. When an outfit is as good as this one there isn’t much needed to be said, so let’s just call it a knit to remember and leave it at that!

Whatever Suits You

The Row Jacket and Pants, Mantu Blouse, Gianvito Rossi Sandals; all available at Savannah Santa Monica. Prada Bag, Celine Shades.

I love the creativity that comes with putting together an outfit. Many people I know shudder at the thought, but I welcome it with open arms. I also like to create a suit from scratch, as it allows for multiple uses of my jackets, slacks and blouses. A basic closet staple is a good blazer. Most people own a couple in black or grey, but few of us think of navy as an option. This year, navy is huge and shows no sign of diminishing; I have purchased one in a cropped sleeve style that I have already worn countless times. I have paired it with brown slacks, as I do here, as well as jeans. Whatever you do, keep an open mind to including more navy in your wardrobe, it is fresh and timeless and goes beautifully with every color, yes, even and most especially black.

If you decide to go for it and suit up in a navy jacket and a different color pant, the top you wear should feature the color of your slacks. Here I chose this polka dotted blouse by Mantu because the brown dots tie in the brown slacks. If I had chosen red slacks, I might have kept the top in white, (a neutral color), navy, red or a pattern that includes those colors. You want the colors to harmonize, so that the suit does not look too “invented.”

Suiting up from scratch may be just the thing you need to get you out of your suit rut, and into making more use of the items stowed away in your closet.

Uncovering the Lace

Co Coat, Sandro Dress, Jimmy Choo Heels, Gucci Handbag, Christian Dior Tribal Earrings.

Co Coat, Sandro Dress, Jimmy Choo Heels, Gucci Handbag, Christian Dior Tribal Earrings.

One fashion investment that I believe strongly in, is a good quality spring coat; if you happen to find on one sale, even better. In Los Angeles, a good spring coat will take you through chilly nights and cool winter days. In Canada and the Northeast, it will see you through the spring and well into the fall. I love this one for many reasons. Firstly, it is black so it will go with everything. There is no metal detail so you so you don’t have to worry about matching accessories to the hardware. This is a subject about which people have differing opinions, and so instead of delving into it right now, I will postpone the discussion to a future post. This coat is tapered at the waist, which is a feature that I, as someone of shorter stature, appreciates. This coat is well made and feels good. I know it is one of those “forever” items with which I will never part.

This lace dress is by Sandro, one of my favorite designers.  The minute I put it on, I knew it would be a keeper. The lace detail is feminine, sexy and demure all at the same time. I wasn’t sure (and still am not), about the tie below the collar. I added the pearls to offset it and it seemed to soften the look immediately. The heels with their thin ankle strap do not cut off the leg.  One of my fashion pet peeves is an ankle strap that cuts off the leg. Unless you are a leggy five foot ten, it can be quite unflattering. This one, by Jimmy Choo, is not, because it is both thin and loose. Lace is provocative, but the way this designer has used it, is both simple and interesting.

Jumpsuit Joy: Revisiting an Old Friend

Derek Lam Jacket, Sandro Jumpsuit, Worth New York Belt, Gianvito Rossi Sandals (also available at Savannah Santa Monica), Chanel Clutch.

Derek Lam Jacket, Sandro Jumpsuit, Worth New York Belt, Gianvito Rossi Sandals (also available at Savannah Santa Monica), Chanel Clutch.

I love a good jumpsuit. It takes me back to the 80’s, when I owned many jumpsuits, as my photo albums will attest.  Lucky for me, thirty years later, the jumpsuit continues to trend for spring and summer. This one, by Sandro, is comfortable and chic with the silver details at the shoulder. I added the silver belt to give my waist some definition. On the day that we shot, there was a nip in the air and I was grateful to have this tried and true little jacket by Derek Lam. I must admit that when I bought it years ago, I was really on the fence about it. Happily, I have worn it time and time again with both dresses as well as jeans. Don't limit yourself by wearing only dressy with dressy; instead, pair dressy with casual and you will have much more fashion fun!

I believe that the platform shoe, which originated in the 70’s, carried over to the early 80’s; therefore, to complete my ode to this decade, I chose these chic and comfortable navy suede platform sandals, by Gianvito Rossi. Now I really “Rock the Casbah!”*

*Rock The Casbah was a hit song in the early 80’s by the English band The Clash…..remember? If not, click here for a trip down memory lane.

Canadian Tuxedo

Burberry Denim Jacket, Peter Cohen Top and R13 Jeans (available at Savannah Santa Monica), Belle by Sigerson Morrison Booties (similar here), Celine Bag, Oliver Peoples Sunglasses, Cartier Watch, China Wall Belt.

A jean jacket paired with jeans is called a “Canadian Tuxedo.” I learned this when I moved to the U.S. from my native Canada. Up until that point, I never knew that the term existed. I figured that it originated because the fashion world viewed pairing denim with denim, a faux pas; and since Canada was not famous for its fashion contributions, the term was accompanied by a negative connotation.  Once I did some research, I discovered that the term was coined in 1951, when Bing Crosby was denied entrance to a Canadian hotel simply because he was dressed all in denim, something that was deemed too casual for a formal setting in a very conservative country.

I am in love with these jeans by R13. I had never heard of this brand until I discovered it at Savannah. I will admit that the jeans are a tad pricey, but they are so comfortable and flattering, that I was willing to splurge. The silk top that ties is both a shout out to the retro look of yesteryear, but with a more contemporary feel, and this look is very trendy right now. This denim jacket by Burberry, which I have owned for years, always seems to add the right amount of wow to an outfit. The moto booties keep everything looking edgy. I have put together less expensive options for you below.

Roberto Cavalli Dress, St. John Bracelet, Gianvito Rossi Pumps (available at Savannah Santa Monica), Mulberry Clutch, Celine Sunglasses, Robin Terman necklace (diamond bar) and earrings, Heart necklace; family heirloom

For me, a great dress comes with a great story; and so it goes for this one by Roberto Cavalli.  I first came upon this dress when I discovered it in a forest green color at The Scoop Brentwood store back in December. A woman was returning it, and rather than just stand there in silence, I told her that it was really pretty. She told me that she was buying it to wear to a wedding but thought that the place and time of year (San Francisco in December), seemed a tad too cold and wintry for this lightweight little dress, so she was returning it. Unable to resist the urge, I asked her if, since she was returning it, I try it on. She told me to go ahead since she was definitely not taking it. When I emerged from the dressing room, it was love at first sight. Comfy and pretty were what it had going for it, and I was definitely purchasing this dress, especially since it was marked down by 40%. What I didn’t realize is that the more I raved about it, the more the woman who was returning it softened towards the dress.  Inevitably, she changed her mind. I was quietly crushed, and with a smile, I reluctantly changed back into my clothes and handed it over to the original buyer. The sales people assured me that they would order me one immediately and not to worry. I drove off feeling like all was well in the world of shopping; only moments later, I received a call from Scoop telling me that the dress was sold out in my size. I scolded myself for having opened my mouth in the first place. Had I simply stood there, lips sealed at the time of the dress’s return, it would be in my car on its way to MY closet.

Lucky for me, this story has a happy ending. While sifting through racks and racks of 75% off dresses at Saks, I came upon the same dress in red…more my color, and in my size. I took this as a sign from above (Jeff probably has a perplexed expression or is rolling his eyes as he reads this), and bought it. The feeling of vindication championed my emotions and I knew just when I would be wearing this dress. This would be my Valentines Day dress, because like my Valentine, Jeff, this dress was also “meant to be!”

Hot Pink On A Cold Day

Ralph Lauren Dress, Mantu Jacket, John Hardy Necklace, Michael Kors Belt, Gucci Handbag, Pomwum Charms (contact pomwum@gmail.com to order), Christian Dior Heels.

I love to wear bright colors, especially in winter, since they have the ability to elevate an otherwise dreary, or overcast day. I admit that this particular shade of pink is quite hot; however, over the years, I have learned that bright colors look better on me than do pastels, so I readily gravitate towards them. What I love about this dress is that it is a stretchy knit which means that if you over-indulge the night before, you needn’t worry about struggling with a tight zipper or button; and by adding a wide belt,  you are able to camouflage a myriad of figure flaws. This one, by Michael Kors, which I have owned for years, will never vacate my closet, for that very reason!

My little Mantu jacket has become this winter’s staple since it is flared on the bottom and falls at just the right length to reveal the waistline.

The little furry pom-poms are my Fab Find for this month. I saw them on a handbag on Instagram, and fell madly in love with them. I ordered them in a few colors and now add them to my handbags as I would any charm. Everyone asks me where I got them, and now I will share the information with you. The company is called Pomwum and you can order yours by contacting pomwum@gmail.com.

Stay warm this winter by dressing in a hot shade!

Black Balmain

Balmain Dress, Jimmy Choo Boots, Saks Fifth Ave Leather Coat, Tom Ford Clutch, Missoni Necklace, Celine Sunglasses.

Balmain Dress, Jimmy Choo Boots, Saks Fifth Ave Leather Coat, Tom Ford Clutch, Missoni Necklace, Celine Sunglasses.

I am always cold. I get chilled even here in Los Angeles, which is a bit odd since I grew up in one of the coldest places in North America, Winnipeg. That is why, when I saw this long sleeved black dress on sale at Saks, I immediately grabbed it and headed directly for the dressing room. While inside the room, I said a little prayer in hopes that it would fit…and it did. Not only was this dress warm and cozy, but it was by Balmain, (a very high end and chic French design house), and its price was reduced by 75%! Yay…..win, win and win!

One thing that we can get away with here in Los Angeles, is wearing a dress or skirt bare legged with a boot. This is something that I would never dream of doing on the east coast or Canada, but there is something chic and relaxed, and very LA about doing it.

My tried and true black leather coat, with the fur trim is my favorite thing to wear over a dress. It adds just the right amount of warmth for Los Angeles during the winter or colder climates during the spring or fall.

Obsessed With the 70’s

Top, Wrap, and Skirt all by Worth New York, Vintage Boots, Vintage Celine Handbag, Oliver Peoples Sunglasses.

Top, Wrap, and Skirt all by Worth New York, Vintage Boots, Vintage Celine Handbag, Oliver Peoples Sunglasses.

If there is a decade that I am drawn to, it is the 70’s. I was a teenager during the 70’s and so the music, fashion and culture are both familiar and comforting to me. Shag rugs, arc lamps and relaxed furnishings are how my mother decorated our home, and it seems it left its stamp on me in a very big way; my living room has a shag rug and arc lamp.

I definitely owned several pieces of plaid clothing, whether it was dresses, pants or skirts. Pairing these with warm knits and high boots were all the rage back then and, so it seems, today as well.

This outfit, by Worth New York, drew me in at first glance because it felt so retro to me. I love the weight of the skirt, which is perfect for a warm California winter, or a spring/fall East Coast day. But the pièce de résistance is the crisscross wrap. This is the most unique yet useful item of clothing that I purchased this year; Worth New York, you have done it again. My vintage brown suede boots and vintage Celine bag are the perfect compliment to the 70’s feel of the outfit. Moral of the story, don’t toss things simply because they are old….a new outfit can always use an old friend.

Coffee with My Cream

Filuhats Hat, Co Sweater (available at Savannah Santa Monica), Joie Tank, AG Jeans (available at Scoop NYC), Gianvito Rossi Boots, Celine Handbag, Calypso St. Barth Necklaces, Stone and Leaf.

Filuhats Hat, Co Sweater (available at Savannah Santa Monica), Joie Tank, AG Jeans (available at Scoop NYC), Gianvito Rossi Boots, Celine Handbag, Calypso St. Barth Necklaces, Stone and Leaf.

I love to wear the color cream. I love the freshness and simplicity of it. However, it beckons to be joined by a little color, and to me, there is nothing better with cream than a good old fashioned brown.  Brown creates a warmth that compliments the coolness of cream.

The old school of fashion taught us to match our handbag with our shoes. The new school does not adhere to that rule; in this case, adding an additional color seems wrong to me, so I am sticking with the matching set. It is no secret that I am a hat girl. I have worn hats in several posts and I will never tire of singing their praises. Hats cover flaws, like a bad hair day or a missed color appointment. Hats add a “je ne sais quoi” attitude to an outfit, lending an air of mystery and sophistication.

Red Borders

Alexander McQueen Co-ord (Spring 2015), Jimmy Choo Pumps (available at Scoop NYC Brentwood), Lanvin Necklace, Christian Dior Earrings, Parker Ochs Clutch.

When Alexander McQueen passed away suddenly and tragically in 2010, the fashion world lost an icon. His designs were bold, daring and easily identifiable. Whether flowy or structured, his clothes shouted themselves from the rooftops. I happened to own two of his pieces; one, a chartreuse chiffon tunic that I purchased in 2004, and the other, a black suit with gold zippers. Sadly, I sold the suit before Mr. McQueen’s untimely death, but the chartreuse tunic is a permanent member of my closet!

In 2010, Sarah Burton took over as creative director of the fashion house, and I am in love with her designs. This co-ord, (short for "coordinate" in the fashion dictionary), is a perfect example of how she combines the boldness of McQueen with her own whimsy. I have worn this outfit to dinner, and a party, as well as lunch. I love the color red; it is one of my favorites, and the way that it borders both the top and the pants completes the fanciful effect. I have even separated the two pieces and worn the pants with a black sweater and the top over a pair of jeans. If you think outside the box, you will get a lot more wear out of an outfit and therefore more bang for your buck.

Worth New York Coat, Aqua Turtleneck, Rag and Bone Jeans, Jimmy Choo Over-the-Knee Boots, similar on sale here, Stephanie Kantis Necklaces, Gucci Belt, Valentino Handbag, Celine Shades.

This shiny coat by Worth New York was designed as the centerpiece for this outfit. I knew that I wanted to wear jeans and my over the knee boots. I added a little bling in the form of the necklaces, Gucci belt and Valentino purse, to enhance the effect of the coat. I always front tuck a long sweater or shirt to show off the buckle of the belt I am wearing. It is a bit tricky because it has to look effortless and may take a bit of practice to get just the right amount of tuck without causing the fabric to pull in the back.

The Los Angeles weather has taken a wintry turn and I, for one, am kicking up my fashion heels. It is a rare winter here in Southern California that we actually get to wear cold weather clothes, especially outerwear. On the day that we shot this outfit, the temperatures dipped and the winds turned blustery. I shoot several outfits on one shoot, so I was grateful to end the day with this outfit that kept me warm from head to toe.

I love wraps. They serve a multitude of functions, and when they are as beautiful as this one, they beg to be worn in a dramatic and eye catching way. I was actually wearing these red Hudson jeans and a black tee last winter when I was visiting my parents in the desert, when I came upon this Ulla Johnson wrap at the Elizabeth and Prince boutique on El Paseo. I couldn’t believe how it uplifted my outfit and truly transformed it to something special. After many oohs and ahhs of other patrons, I decided to get it. I felt that it had a Latin quality to it and this hat completed my vision. My tried and true Balenciaga backpack, which can be worn three ways , adds the right amount of “muy bien” to this Mexicali ensemble.

Sugar Coated

Cabi Coat, True Royal Pants, Worth New York Tank and Belt, Jimmy Choo Pumps, Chanel Clutch, Christian Dior Shades, Cox and Power Ring, Robin Terman Choker and Earrings.

Cabi Coat, True Royal Pants, Worth New York Tank and Belt, Jimmy Choo Pumps, Chanel Clutch, Christian Dior Shades, Cox and Power Ring, Robin Terman Choker and Earrings.

This coat by Cabi is a sweet deal. At $169.00, it is worth every penny. First off, is it easy to wear either dressed up with a pair of tailored pants, or casually with a pair of jeans. A dressy coat over a pair of pants does double duty as a pantsuit, but with even more versatility. In my opinion, it is a far better investment than a blazer.

In addition, you can wear it over a skirt or dress for a more polished look. Either way, you cannot lose. These days, when the temperatures have been mild on both coasts, it is a balmy 64 degrees in NYC today, you can wear this coat now and then again in the spring. Here in southern California, you can layer a sweater underneath for added warmth.

I want to reiterate that navy and black pair beautifully. I have many friends who ask me what they can wear with navy, and when I tell them, “black,” they look at me quizzically. Black and navy go together like salt and pepper. They don’t appear to be likely partners, but they compliment each other in just the right way. This coat would look great over a pair of black pants, skirt or dress.

As you well know by now, I am a huge fan of the two clothing lines, Cabi and Worth New York,  which are each sold by two different friends of mine. Each line is completely different in style and price point, but what they have in common are loyal fans. They know precisely to whom they are appealing and why.  This outfit is a perfect example of how these two lines can co-exist. Cabi’s fun lace top speaks to its promise of keeping its clients dressed in the latest trends. Lace dominated the Fall 2015 as well as the Spring 2016 runways and it is an affordable $96.00.

Worth New York  knows that its client expects both design and quality. As a Worth devotee, I can rely on certain items to make repeat performances throughout the years. This skirt, caught my eye in the Spring of 2014, and has been catching it ever since. Denim, continues to trend for Spring 2016, so this flouncy number will be sticking around for a while.

Stuart Weitzman’s over the knee boot seems to be a staple of fashion bloggers’ closets. I have seen this boot all over Instagram. I got mine last Spring and am quite pleased that I did. I have worn these boots time and time again, and their neutral color make them easy to wear and versatile.

Denim, lace and over the knee: three different design teams, three different price points, and three different trends, making beautiful music together!

What’s The Scoop?

blog-02.jpg

This Wednesday, December 2nd,  from 6:00 PM -8:00 PM, we are celebrating the second anniversary of the blog at Scoop NYC in Brentwood. I am very excited for a number of reasons. Firstly, I happen to love this store. It is very well curated for both men and women and features clothing that goes from office to weekend to cocktails. In short, you will find something for every aspect of your life no matter how casual or dressy. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They truly go the distance to locate something that you have your heart set on even if it means having it sent from one of their many stores located throughout the country. Since we all like a deal, Scoop is discounting every item in the store. Who wouldn’t want to get a Chloe bag at 20% off?….just sayin’!

The part of this celebration that I am also thrilled about is that Scoop is also donating a generous portion of the sales to Can Do Multiple Sclerosis. I first became aware of this organization when a dear friend of mine, who suffers from the disease, informed me that Can Do MS has done so much to assist her and so many others who live with Multiple Sclerosis. I do hope that you will come out to celebrate with us and know that your shopping efforts benefit others; if you are purchasing a holiday gift that night, you are actually gifting twice!

I am also bringing an assortment of pastries that I have featured on the blog, such as my Low Fat Chocolate Chip Cookies,  Gluten Free Devils Night Muffins and Chocolate Bark. This week's recipe is for a hearty and healthy carrot loaf that I will also be bringing to the party!

This week I have put together a collage of outfits that I have worn on the blog that happen to come from Scoop. As I was looking through the FabuLesley archives, I was amazed at the amount of outfits or pieces that I have from this fabulous store. Here is my round up.

Looking forward to seeing you there!!!

The first time I laid eyes on this skirt, by Worth New York, I was immediately attracted to it. The combination of its unique design and use of the gorgeous autumnal palette, make this skirt a winner. Given the fact that autumn in LA means the temperatures during the day, fall between 68-72, I figured I could get away with Worth’s matching tank and just throw a cardigan over my shoulders for a bit of warmth. Years ago, on a whim and SAKS triple point day, I purchased these LV shoes, and have worn them repeatedly ever since. They are extremely comfortable, and although I try to shy away from screaming logos, I thought that these were quiet enough to be seen but not heard. Suede is everywhere this fall and continues through the Spring and Summer of 2016. Start investing in yours now, when the sales begin!

Overhaul

Loup Overalls, Givenchy Bag, Christian Dior Pumps, Vintage Bib, similar here, Marc Jacobs Eyeglasses, Oliver Peoples Sunglasses, Worth New York Blouse, Cox and Power Scrabble Piece Necklace, Cabi Earrings.

If I told you that I found these overalls at a hair salon in Winnipeg, you probably wouldn’t believe me…but it’s true! The Edward Carriere salon is a hybrid beauty/boutique. You may recall that I posted about them last year. More and more salon owners are offering an array of clothing and accessories for sale in order to compensate for the decrease in sales of hair products due to beauty supply stores and online shopping. I, for one, am happy about this, because I don’t know that I would have otherwise found these!

The last time I wore a pair of overalls, must have been 1989 and I am not joking. They were not the most flattering of clothing items and were difficult to wear. Most of us wore them loose and baggy and no matter the vantage point, they did nothing for us. Fast forward to 2015, and voila, this version is simply fabulous. Black denim updates the look from faded denim work coveralls, to out to dinner chic-ness. They are fitted at the waist and the bib lies flat which elongates the torso.  You can wear them to work with a simple white blouse and a delicate necklace, or add some vibrant jewelry (like this bib), and take them out on the town.
